"Aryna to take centre stage"
Petra Kvitova is a Czech player, aged 28 and ranked 7th in the world. Her best surface is grass and plays better on clay than hard courts, surprisingly. She won this tournament in 2015 and had previously made 2 semi-finals. 2018 was very good for her, winning 5 tournaments by the end of June. The second half of the year was not as good, losing all 3 of her matches in Singapore. In Brisbane last week, she lost in the second round to Kontaveit in straight sets.
Aryna Sabalenka is from Belarus, aged 20 and ranked 13th in the world. She plays her best tennis on hard courts and just won the first tournament of the year in Shenzhen. She had a very successful 2018, winning the tournament in New Haven in August and then a month later in Wuhan as well. Coached by Dmitry Tursunov, she has risen rapidly in the rankings to be a contender in the first grand slam of the year in Melbourne. She plays very Gung Ho tennis and can come back when seemingly out of a match.
