"Svitolina, leaner and hungry for success"
Elina Svitolina is from Ukraine, aged 24 and ranked 7th in the world. She has been ranked as high as 3 which she achieved in September of 2017. She plays her best tennis on hard courts, winning 28 matches last year on that surface, for the loss of just 10. She won 4 tournaments last year - Brisbane and Dubai on hard courts. Rome on clay and the Masters Cup on indoor hard. This year she lost in the 1st round of Brisbane to Sasnovich but has won 4 matches here in Melbourne. She is a very fast base-liner and although she hasnt fared particularly well in grand slams, she looks fired up for this one.
Naomi Osaka is a Japanese player, aged 21 and at her highest rank of 4th in the world. Her father is from Haiti and Mother from Japan and has been living in the States from the age of 3. Her break-through year was in 2018 when she won Indian Wells in March and the US Open in September. After that she won 3 matches in Tokyo and 4 in Beijing but due to tiredness and injury she lost every match in the Masters Cup in Singapore.
Info: Melbourne - hard courts.
Head to Head: Svitolina leads 3-2 having won the last 2 in Dubai and Miami last year.
